First Person Video Poker

Objective of the game

First Person Video Poker is a very popular poker variant. The goal is to achieve the best possible five-card hand at the end of the round.

Five cards are dealt initially, and the player can either keep them or exchange them for new cards. When the round ends, players' winnings are paid out based on the value of their hand and the payout table they selected in the game.

Rules of the game

The game is played with a standard 52-card deck, which is used during the dealing phase, and several additional standard decks, one for each hand and player, during the results phase. The decks used for each hand are in random order and are composed of the cards left in the starting deck after the initial five cards were dealt.

Each player can play a maximum of 100 hands and choose their own paytable. By default, players start with zero hands.

Game round

Players select their bet amount, paytable, and number of hands using the +1, +10, MAX, and UNDO buttons.

The maximum number of hands that can be selected is 100, and the bet amount is applied to each selected hand. The total number of hands and the total bet are displayed on the screen.

Example: A player decides to bet €1 and selects 20 hands. The total amount of his bet is €20.

The default paytable is “Jacks or Better,” but the player can choose any paytable they want from these five options:

  • Jacks or Better
  • Tens or better (Tens or Better)
  • Deuces Wild
  • Bonus Poker
  • Double Double Bonus

To begin, the player must choose at least one hand to play with for the “DEAL” button to be activated.

After clicking or tapping the “DEAL” button, the player receives the first five cards, which are displayed face up. The bottom half of the screen displays the five-card hand dealt (called the “Main Hand”), and the top half of the screen displays the player's selected virtual hands, face down.

The player then chooses which of the five cards to keep and which to switch. Players can keep between none and five of the five cards dealt.

To help the player decide, a line highlights which cards in the main hand to keep, depending on the player's predetermined paytable strategy. The player can follow the suggestion or ignore it.

Please note that the default paytable strategy is not always the optimal strategy.

To hold a card, the player has to click on it or touch it, this way the “HOLD” status that appears below it disappears and the “HELD” status appears above it.

The extra hands in the top half of the screen show the cards the player chose to hold. All cards not marked with the word HELD are replaced with new cards. Each hand has its own deck.

After a period of inactivity, if no cards are held or touched, the default decision is made on behalf of the player:

  • If the player has not clicked “DEAL” before the inactivity period, the game ends without betting.
  • If the player has clicked “DEAL” but has not held any cards before the inactivity period, the default strategy of the chosen paytable is automatically activated.
  • If the player has already clicked “DEAL” and chosen which cards to keep, their decision will be taken into account and play will continue accordingly.

Default strategy

The default strategy is used to help the player decide which cards to keep. It is also used in the event of player inactivity.

The default strategy depends on the paytable:

Jacks or higher

  1. A straight flush or better always stands.
  2. If you have four cards to make a flush, all four are retained.
  3. If you have any pair or higher, those cards are kept.
  4. If you have four cards to make a straight, all four are kept. If two straights can be made, the one with the highest card is kept.
  5. If you have a jack or higher, the highest card is retained.
  6. No card is held back.

Tens or higher

  1. A straight flush or better always stands.
  2. If you have four cards to make a flush, all four are retained.
  3. If you have any pair or higher, those cards are kept.
  4. If you have four cards to make a straight, all four are kept. If two straights can be made, the one with the highest card is kept.
  5. If you have a 10 or higher, the highest card is retained.
  6. No card is held back.

Twos wild card

  1. If you have four twos* or higher, all cards are held.
  2. If you have three twos and a 10 or higher, those four cards are kept.
  3. If you have a straight flush or better, all five cards are held.
  4. If you have three twos, they are retained.
  5. If you have a trio or higher, those cards are retained.
  6. If you have a two, it is retained.
  7. If you have four cards to go for a straight or flush, all four are held.
  8. If you have a pair, those cards are kept.
  9. No card is held back.

* Two: a card with a value of 2, also known as a “joker.”

Bonus Poker

  1. A poker or better is always held.
  2. If you have three aces, all three are retained.
  3. If you have any pair or higher, those cards are kept.
  4. If you have four cards to make a flush, all four are retained.
  5. If you have four cards to make a straight, all four are kept. If two straights can be made, the one with the highest card is kept.
  6. If you have a jack or higher, the highest card is retained.
  7. No card is held back.

Double double bonus

  1. A royal straight flush is always held.
  2. Four aces are always held with a kicker of 2, 3 or 4.
  3. If you have 4 aces, they are retained.
  4. Four twos, threes, or fours are always held with a kicker of an ace, 2, 3, or 4.
  5. If you have four twos, threes, or fours, they are retained.
  6. If you have four cards to make a flush, all four cards of that suit are kept.
  7. If you have any pair or higher, those cards are kept.
  8. If you have four cards to make a straight, all four are kept. If two straights can be made, the one with the highest card is kept.
  9. If you have a jack or higher, the highest card is retained.
  10. No card is held back.

Wild cards

In Wild Deuces, all deuces are considered wild cards, regardless of suit. Each wild card can substitute for any card in the initial 52-card deck.

Game result

Once the decision is made, the cards the player decides not to keep are exchanged for new cards to form new five-card hands. If the player decides not to keep any of the cards, all of them are exchanged. They then click or tap the “DRAW” button.

The result is displayed on the screen and the player's winning hands are highlighted.

The paytable shows how often each type of hand was drawn, its payout, and the player's total winnings for that round.

Winning hands

The cards are ranked in descending order of value: Ace (high or low), King (K), Queen (Q), Jack (J), 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, and 2.

An Ace can be the highest card in a straight of A, K, Q, J, 10 or the lowest card in a straight of 5, 4, 3, 2, A.

Possible hands (from best to worst):

Royal flush is a straight flush that includes the ace, king, queen, jack, and 10, all of the same suit.

A straight flush is a hand that includes five cards in a row, all of the same suit, for example: 9, 8, 7, 6 and 5 of hearts.

Four of a kind is a hand that includes all four cards of a given rank and any other cards. For example, four aces in a hand would be four of a kind.

A full house is a hand made up of three equal cards of one value and two equal cards of another value, for example: three kings and two sixes.

A flush is a hand made up of five cards of the same suit, but not in a row, for example: five club cards.

A straight is a hand consisting of five consecutive cards of at least two different suits, for example 9, 8, 7, 6 and 5 of two or more suits.

A three of a kind is a hand made up of three cards of the same rank and two cards that are neither of that rank nor equal to each other. For example, a player holding three kings would have a three of a kind.

Two pairs is a hand consisting of two cards of the same rank and two cards of another rank (matching each other but not the first pair), plus any card that is not of either of the previous two ranks, for example: two aces and two kings.

Payments

Each hand pays only for the highest ranking of the chosen paytable.

Example: If the player chooses the Jacks or Better paytable and has a pair of aces and a pair of eights, this combination can be either Two Pairs or Jacks or Better. Therefore, the player is paid the Two Pairs payout, since Two Pairs is better than Jacks or Better.
